How
Much
Structure?
Because
everyone's
idea
of
homeschool
is
different,
we
asked
you
to
tell
us
about
your
style
of
homeschooling
and
how
much
"structure"
works
for
you.
Here's
how
one
mother
handled
two
children
with
very
different
learning
styles
and
very
different
needs
in
terms
of a
structured
learning
environment.
Different
Structure
for
Different
Kids
By
Andrea
Hermitt
Finding
the
proper
balance
of
structure
in
our
homeschool
experience
has
been
difficult
at
best.
Our
first
year
consisted
of
the
both
children
doing
their
schoolwork
at
their
own
pace,
and
my
observing
them.
This
helped
me
determine
their
personal
body
clocks
and
comfortable
work
pace.
I
found
out
that
my
son,
my
oldest
child
would
do
exactly
what
he
was
told
and
no
more.
My
daughter,
however
would
keep
going
until
you
told
her
to
stop.
They
were
using
an
online
interactive
homeschool
program
called
ChildU.
The
ease
of
using
this
program
helped
me
focus
less
on
teaching
and
more
on
evaluating.
Our
second
year
however,
I
pushed
them
both
quite
a
bit.
Also,
ChildU
was
going
through
some
growing
pains
and
transitioned
away
from
homeschoolers,
so I
had
to
switch
to
books
mid-year.
When
I
pushed
for
more
visible
'work,'
my
oldest
ignored
me
and
my
youngest
became
frustrated.
But
at
least
I
knew
what
I was
dealing
with.
My
son
didn't
see
me as
a
teacher,
and
my
daughter
didn't
like
her
natural
pace
disturbed.
Our
third,
and
current
year,
I put
my
oldest
(grade
6)
into
a
local
academic
program
where
he
was
accountable
to
other
adults.
I am
still
pushing
him
to do
more,
because
I
know
he
can
handle
it,
and
so do
his
teachers.
For
my
youngest
(grade
4),
however,
we
are
taking
it
easy
again,
because
I
noticed
that
she
accomplishes
more
with
less
pressure.
Fortunately
Time4learning.com
picked
up
where
ChildU
left
off
and
re-adapted
the
program
for
homeschoolers.
This
has
helped
us
settle
into
a
rhythm
that
will
I
hope
take
us
through
the
next
year
or
so.
Thank
you
for
your
comments
and
insight,
Andrea.
It's
amazing
how
different
our
children
can
be!
Thank
goodness
we
have
the
option
to
teach
and
nurture
them
at
home;
each
at
his
or
her
own
pace,
level
of
ability,
and
degree
of
motivation... PS.
Please
enjoy
your
"Classy"
bumper
sticker
as
our
token
of
thanks
for
your
submission.
