A Child's Garden of Verses, by Robert Louis Stevenson, illustrated by Tasha Tudor

This classic edition beautifully portrays Stevenson's sometimes exuberant, sometimes melancholy childhood poems, which so many of us grew up with. Perfect for gentle bedtime reading, this book with its lovely illustrations and classic rhyme and rhythm, is a must for every child's bookshelf. For children of all ages.Mary Engelbreit's Mother Goose : One Hundred Best-Loved Verses

Mary Engelbreit's Mother Goose: One Hundred Best-Love Verses

From the colorful imagination of Mary Englebreit springs a Mother Goose world bursting with warmth and humor. It's a masterful collection of the adorable, the zany, and the beautiful that will be cherished for generations. As complete as can be with one hundred rhymes in all, this is truly a book to treasure.

The 20th Century Children's Book Treasury, by Janet Schulman

Believe it or not, 44 complete read-aloud classics and future classics--from Goodnight Moon to Stellaluna--are packed in this remarkably svelte, positively historic anthology. Flipping through the 308 pages of The 20th-Century Children's Book Treasury is like browsing a photo album of beloved friends and family. The familiar faces of Curious George and Ferdinand the Bull peer earnestly from the pages, and scenes from Madeline and Millions of Cats resonate as if you just experienced them yesterday. From baby/toddler books such as Whose Mouse Are You?, through preschool books such as Where the Wild Things Are, to longer stories for ages 5 and older such as Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day, you'll love the idea of being within easy reach of a Star-Belly Sneetch, a William Steig donkey, and a Sendak monster at all times, and we're sure your little bookworms will, too.

A Treasury of Children's Literature, compiled by Armand Eisen

This one-volume library of classic children's literature contains nursery rhymes, poems, fables, and stories, and is lavishly illustrated with more than two hundred full-color drawings by sixteen different artists. A beautiful addition to your family bookshelf. Click on the image to see the artwork in detail.

Something Big Has Been Here, Jack Prelutsky

In this delightful companion to The New Kid on the Block, an early worm frightens the early bird, four vain and ancient tortoises race to see who can get to the finish line last. Other subjects near and dear to children's hearts make fabulous fodder for fun, including sibling rivalry, bad table manners, meatloaf, and bats. Illustrator James Stevenson's lively line drawings capture Prelutsky's goofy poetic antics perfectly, making this collection another essential addition to any child's library. Ages 4+

Poetry Speaks to Children Book / CD, Elise Paschen (6-11yr)

Poetry Speaks to Children reaches into the world of poetry and pulls out the elements children love: rhyme, rhythm, fun and, every once in a while, a little mischief. Illustrated in color throughout, Poetry Speaks to Children is designed for children ages six to eleven. Featuring more than 100 poems-50 of them brought to life on CD-ranging from Gwendolyn Brooks to Ogden Nash, Shel Silverstein to J.R.R. Tolkien, the book and CD will allow children (and parents!) to read and listen simultaneously.

His Dark Materials, by Philip Pullman

This boxed set includes the trilogy: The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife, and The Amber Spyglass. I first read The Golden Compass and was hooked on this parallel world of mystery and intrigue and in which every human has a companion dæmon. My son then read the entire trilogy and couldn't put it down. The third installment is a bit heavy, but my 15-year-old (at the time) loved all three books. Ages 12+

Mystery of the Shrieking Island, by R.T. Byrum

This is the first of three adventures, for some more exciting than the relatively tame Hardy Boys stories. You'll also find The Phantom Bridge and Flight into Terror if you scroll down the description page link above.

Lynne Reid Banks: Return of the Indian, Secret of the Indian, Mystery of the Cupboard, Indian in the Cupboard

The Indian in the Cupboard Boxed Set, by Lynn Reid Banks

We loved these books; they're fun, creative, and so hard to put down! Included are Indian in the Cupboard, Return of the Indian, Secret of the Indian, and Mystery of the Cupboard. You'll also find another title in the series, The Key to the Indian, available separately.

The Happy Hollisters, by Jerry West

I was so excited to find these these original Happy Hollister books available! They were my absolute favorites when I was a child, and I read them all! I passed my books on to my siblings, so had to sift through thrift stores and garage sales to find them for my children. There were 33 books in this series, written between approximately 1953 and 1970. Although rather outdated, these exciting mysteries may be an excellent way to introduce children to the changes that have taken place in our society over the past half century. Great for younger children, ages 4-9.

Harry Potter series, J. K. Rowling

Five years of magic, adventure, and mystery at Hogwarts -- now available in a complete hardcover box set. Includes books 1-5 of the worldwide bestselling series: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, and Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. This boxed paperback set is quite affordable.
