Although the focus of this book is teaching writing in the first grade classroom, the methods are very effective for teaching homeschoolers, ages 6+ to write authentically. Encourage your children to use family message journals on a daily basis and watch your children's enthusiasm for written communication grow.

The Parenting Breakthrough: Real-Life Plan to Teach Kids to Work, Save Money, and Be Truly Independent

The Parenting Breakthrough by Merrilee Browne Boyack

Described as a "Real-Life Plan to Teach Kids to Work, Save Money, and Be Truly Independent," this book has received huge kudos from parents everywhere. Be sure to read the Customer Reviews for this remarkable book. Not only do parents love it, but kids do too!

Growing Up Creative, by Teresa Amabile, Ph.D.

This book is a myth-shattering look at the most important yet misunderstood aspect of a child's development: creativity. Growing Up Creative is filled with dozens of concrete, hands-on exercises that can help parents keep creativity alive. The key is motivation that originates from within the child; an intrinsic combination of work and play. Read more about nurturing creativity in our weblog.

Families Writing (Second Edition)

Families Writing, by Peter Stillman

In this very practical book, the author details why and how to record words that go straight to the heart; the simple, vital words that will speak to those you care most about and to their descendants many years from now. Encourage family writing with a host of writing experiences, some engrossing, some zany; and none requiring "talent." I found many of the writing prompts in this book (first edition) to be perfect for homeschooling projects.

Performance Without Pressure; A Guide for Parents, by Martin L. Seldman

This timely book shows parents how to promote learning skills without subjecting their children to disabling stress. It focuses on the twin goals of achievement and acceptance -helping a child to master skills and tasks while at the same time acquiring a belief in self-worth that is not tied into success or failure in an particular effort. The many easy-to-learn techniques will help parents instill in their children healthy attitudes about achievement and acceptance that will last a lifetime.

In Their Own Way, Thomas Armstrong, Ph.D.

Armstrong is a former learning disabilities specialist who became disenchanted with the concept of disability. His alternative concept of learning differences, or unique learning styles, is modeled on Howard Gardner's theory of multiple intelligences: linguistic, logical-mathematical, spatial, musical, bodily-kinesthetic, interpersonal, intrapersonal. Believing that schools have failed to develop children's special abilities, he suggests different ways that parents can help children to learn any subject according to their own style and to develop self-esteem. Read more in our weblog about this book and the subject of multiple intelligences. To me, this is what homeschool is all about: understanding and teaching to our children's individual learning styles. This book will help you do that.

Winter's Tale, by Robert Sabuda

Spectacular! Sparkly whites, shiny silvers, and icy pastel hues, Sabuda's dazzling pop-ups upstage the simple text in a tale that highlights the wonders of a winter landscape. The paper constructions are indicative of the artist's usual high standard: an owl soars off the pages; a cave lifts and opens to show the foxes concealed within; and a waterfall cascades into a rushing river, where a bear darts forward to catch the fish that dance above the water's surface. The final 3-D scene shows all of the creatures posed within a forest of evergreens and bare trees, while a snowman standing in front of a lonely house reveals himself as the story's narrator, and promises to return for a visit next year. Be sure to check out all of Robert Sabuda's Pop-Up Books by scrolling down the page and clicking on the individual titles.

The Wheels on the Bus, by Paul O. Zelinsky

"The wheels on the bus go round and round.... All over town." This traditional song, a favorite of children everywhere, is adapted and illustrated by Caldecott Medal winner Paul O.The Wheels on the Bus Zelinsky. Fantastic paper engineering with movable parts, flaps, and wheels that spin makes this an interactive book that young readers will love to pieces (maybe literally!). Pull one tab to make the "wipers on the bus go swish swish swish," and another to see the "babies on the bus cry Waah! Waah! Waah!" The back cover includes the musical notation for "The Wheels on the Bus," so everyone can sing along. This book is still a favorite at our house; now the grandkids are enjoying it! Ages 3+

The Jolly Postman, The Jolly Christmas Postman, by Allan and Janet Ahlberg

These wonderful books give children a chance to read letters sent from one fairy tale or Mother Goose character to another. Among the funnyThe Jolly Christmas Postman notes is one from Jack, who relaxes on a sun-drenched island, thanking the Giant for the gold that let him afford such a nifty vacation. The Jolly Christmas Postman delivers still more letters with gifts as well, which the reader can play with. Warning, these books
